Android the new 'Windows' in making ?
Android OS for tablets and mobile phones has become the next big thing in the OS market. The Android OS from Google which was released in year 2008 has taken about 48% of total smartphone market share starting a patent war among rivals. Android is free to install by manufacturers and provides a strong platform for application developers. Android was being developed by Android Inc. which was acquired by Google in the year 2005. The Android was launched in 2008 with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, which consists of 80 hardware, software and telecommunication companies working towards advance open standards for mobile devices. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) has been given the task for further development and maintenance of Android.
The market share of others has dropped in the last three quarters, Symbian has slipped to 22%, iOS 18.2% and Research In Motion(Blackberry) is at 12%. Windows which has recently partnered with Nokia is at 1.6%. Today Android has more than 135 Million active devices across the world. The major boost in the popularity of Android has been because it is an open source operating system for mobile devices and any manufacturer can install this. Many small manufacturers are coming up with low cost Android devices and with the Google's software kit small manufacturers are able to popularise their brands. All the versions of Android have been named after deserts like Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread & Honeycomb. The latest version of the OS will be out within next six months.
