What is SOPA and PIPA?

You would have heard the news by now that Wikipedia is going blackout today to protest against SOPA and PIPA. Many other websites like Facebook, Google, Mozilla etc. also have initiated a protest against SOPA and PIPA. Social Media has been hit by responses from people who are also protesting against the two bills which are in United States House of Representatives and United States Senate respectively. #DayWithoutWikipedia has been one of the popular worldwide trends on Twitter today.

So what is this SOPA and PIPA?,  SOPA is short for Stop Online Piracy Act and PIPA is the acronym for Protect IP Act. These are the two bills which have been presented in the United States House of Representatives. Basically the bills are to prevent online piracy and stop copyright infringement by websites but it is believed that the bills will restrict the freedom of expression and adversely affect Internet.

Wikipedia has stated that SOPA and PIPA are badly drafted bills that wont be effective in its real objective i.e., to stop piracy and copyright infringement. On the other hand, the bills will have a severe bad affect on the open and free Internet. Wikipedia has given a detailed explanation to its users on why the blackout is happening and why they should also raise their voices against the legislation. SOPA will completely block any site which is involved in copyright infringement or even is linking to a site which is involved in copyright infringement or online piracy.
I am also against SOPA and PIPA and want a free and open Internet. I will urge my readers to voice their opinions against the legislation on any of the social media platforms or in any other forum so that this mass message reaches the concerned authorities.
